It’s that time of the year again! Despite the changes our society has seen in the past few months, tax season is one annual event that will continue, unbothered. So, what does that mean for people in our community?
Services are available to those who need them. United Way of Broome County continues to partner with 211 Susquehanna River Region and Broome County Department of Social Services to offer the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program to our community. Through VITA, IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals.
Who qualifies to use VITA services?
- Those whose household income is less than $66,000
- Those who have lived/ worked in New York for the duration of the tax year
- Those who have no income from rental property
- Those who earned less than $5,000 from self-employment
VITA programming looks a little different this year due to COVID, with social distancing and mandatory masks at all times. Tax documents will be dropped off by appointment and processed at a later date. Another appointment will be scheduled to pick up income tax returns and forms.
