United Way of Broome County Visits Johnson City Senior Center to Learn About Community Impact
In late January, United Way of Broome County’s Community Initiatives team had the wonderful opportunity to visit one of our valued funded partners, the Johnson City Senior Center. This visit allowed us to learn more about the vital services they provide to the senior community and the programs that make a real difference in the lives of local residents.
Upon arrival, we were greeted with warm hospitality and taken on a tour of the facility. The Johnson City Senior Center has intentionally created a welcoming environment where older adults feel supported and valued. We were introduced to some of the dedicated volunteers and community members who regularly visit the center, and it was clear how much they appreciate the services offered.
The Johnson City Senior Center’s mission is to meet the evolving needs of older adults, not only addressing their current health and wellness needs but also preparing for the future needs of adult generations to come.
Members of the center have access to a wide variety of programs aimed at promoting health and well-being. These include health education classes, blood pressure and glucose screenings, and exercise programs like Line Dancing, Tai-Chi, and Yoga. The Senior Center also provides a daily nutrition program that serves hot, nutritious meals, ensuring that community members have access to balanced and healthy food options.
Additional services such as health insurance counseling, Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS), hearing screenings, and immunizations further contribute to the comprehensive care the center provides. It’s clear that the Johnson City Senior Center is not just a place for social interaction, but a crucial resource for preventive health care and physical activity.
At United Way of Broome County, we believe in the power of community, and we’re proud to support organizations like the Johnson City Senior Center that make a direct impact on the lives of older adults in our area. Our Community Initiatives team, along with our volunteers, regularly visits our funded partners to gauge the health of the program and to better understand the needs of the communities they serve.
By staying connected and engaged with these partners, we are able to better support their work and ensure they continue to thrive, helping to meet the ever-changing needs of our community. We look forward to seeing how the Johnson City Senior Center continues to evolve and provide essential services for the years to come.
