A Day Encouraging People to do Good

Nov 12, 2019 | Blog

Every year on the Friday after Thanksgiving, millions of people swarm stores looking for minuscule deals on items such as electronics and clothing. This consumer-centric behavior has led to a decreased awareness of what the holiday season is truly about. In response to the commercialization and consumerism of the post-Thanksgiving season, a movement known as #GivingTuesday has been created to initiate charitable giving during the holiday season.

#GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Over the past seven years, this idea has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, and fueled by the power of social media and collaboration, #GivingTuesday inspires millions of people across the globe to show up and give back to causes and issues that matter to them.  We, as United Way of Broome County, want to create meaningful generosity that lasts well beyond that day, and touches every person in Broome County.

Many people have the misconception that giving always has to be money but that couldn’t be further from the truth; think of it as time, talent, and treasure. Everyone’s time is extremely valuable, everyone has a different talent they can contribute to the cause, and the amount of treasure someone can give is different for every single person. The uniqueness of each person in the community is the strength of another person in need. Whether you know it or not, taking the time out of your day to participate in #GivingTuesday can completely change another person’s life.

United Way of Broome County has been a part of this tradition every year since its creation and we are excited to continue that tradition for years to come. This year, our team will be writing thank you letters for members of our military! Taking the time out of our day to complete these projects reminds us to be grateful for everything we have in life and to never take it for granted. #GivingTuesday takes place on December 3, 2019 this year and we can’t wait for you to be a part of it! Make sure to tag your projects #GivingTuesdayBroome so we can share them across all our social media platforms!

Whether you come together with your family, your community, your company or your organization, find a way to give back and help others.
