Volunteering: Where do I begin?

Aug 25, 2020 | Blog

Although life seems to have been on pause for the past few months, organizations and programs in our area have continued to operate behind the scenes. Many local non-profits throughout Broome County have persevered throughout these hard times. This perseverance would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of area volunteers.

Are you looking to volunteer? Here are some things to consider:

Decide what causes you care about. You will likely enjoy your experience of volunteering more if you are passionate about what you are volunteering for! Ismental health an interest of yours? Consider volunteering at the Mental Health Association of the Southern Tier. Do you have a green thumb? VINES is always accepting volunteers in the warmer months. Or maybe you’re looking to serve our area’s seniors or help with food distribution. Check out some opportunities at the Broome County Council of Churches!

Identify your skills. What are you good at? If you’re a good cook, consider volunteering to help prepare food. The Salvation Army of Binghamton has great opportunities for this. Do you enjoy working with youth? Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Twin Tiers may be fore you!

Consider your schedule. When are you busy? Do you prefer in-person or virtual events? It is important to think about the amount of time you are willing to give as a volunteer. Don’t over-commit yourself.

Tell your family and friends! Have you had a great experience volunteering? Advocate to those around you, and encourage them to look into it themselves! Share your story with us! Together, we are making and difference and we want to hear about it!

Start somewhere! If you are nervous about the commitment of volunteering, consider by starting with a single volunteer event. Contact our Volunteer Initiatives Manager, Joni Kaiser, for information and she can help you on your volunteer journey!

Kicking off this fall, United Way of Broome County is introducing a digital volunteer platform that will help local non-profits recruit volunteers, while matching people to opportunities fit just for them. Make sure to keep an eye out for this fantastic opportunity!
