Living in the rural parts of Broome County, Donna* struggled to access groceries regularly. 75, living alone and without a license, Donna faced this adversity weekly. With no known resources available, Donna was left in need and determined. The trip to the closest grocery store took two and a half hours there and back by bicycle.
Faith in Action Volunteers, one of the many impactful programs through Broome County Council of Churches, works to provide adults ages 60 and over with the assistance they need. This volunteer-driven organization offers services at no cost to qualifying adults in Broome County with tasks including transportation for medical appointments, errands, grocery shopping, friendly visits, light housekeeping, and chores.
After talking with a friend, Donna was informed about the services that Faith in Action provides. After a few phone calls, her situation was assessed, and she was paired with a volunteer close in distance to her that was eager and ready to help. This newfound resource not only allowed Donna to keep a stocked pantry but also gave her the companionship and social interaction she was lacking.
Faith in Action’s volunteer services also include Ramp it Up, which sets out to build wheelchair ramps for those in need, Chop and Chat promotes healthy eating and socialization through group settings at local senior centers and living facilities, and Senior Living Ministry provides worship services at local nursing homes and long-term care facilities.
