What is United Way?

United Way of Broome County raises funds from the community each year to fund specific programs that help thousands of people. A donation to United Way goes directly to help people in the Broome County community--producing positive results that improve the lives of local residents. Working through 30 local partner agencies, United Way supports about 60 programs in education, income, and health, the building blocks for a good life. United Way also sponsors four direct service programs.

In Broome County, United  Way can trace its history back to at least 1918, the earliest known date for the Binghamton United Relief Organization, which was formed to coordinate fund-raising activities among several health and human service organizations.

United Way of Broome County is part of an international network of about 1,300 United Ways in the United States and others in Canada, Australia, and other nations around the globe. Each one is independent and local in both operation and control. Most operate within only one county. Originally organized to coordinate activities among local charities, United Way's role has expanded over the years. Each United Way is now a leader in helping to create partnerships among area organizations and seeking ways to improve the lives of the people living in its coverage area.
