Programs Supported

 

 

Safety Net / Basic Needs

Safety Net/ Basic Needs refers to those services, opportunities, and supports designed to respond to the issues of hunger, homelessness, employability, income, and victimization. Programs reviewed by the Safety Net / Basic Needs panel may include but are not limited to:

·        transportation services

·        affordable housing

·        feeding programs

·        job training

·        food pantries

·        literacy

·        emergency shelter

·        domestic violence services

·        transitional and supportive housing

·        victim services

Decisions on which programs to fund are made on an annual basis by community volunteers. Inclusion on this list of funded programs for the current year is not a guarantee the program will be funded in subsequent years. Funding decisions are based on the availability of funds, quality of the program, and community need.

Programs receiving allocation funding from United Way of Broome County for 2010:

Advocacy Program 
Non-residential services to domestic violence victims include: safety planning, legal and educational information, personal advocacy, supportive counseling and court accompaniment.

Basic Literacy  
Assists low-level readers to increase their reading and writing skills and achieve individual goals .
Literacy Volunteers of Broome/Tioga, Inc.  

Center for Help 
Provides services to people in need of food, housing, clothing, rent, utility help, employment and education and provide referrals for safe and comfortable housing.
Broome County Urban League, Inc.
 

Central New York Legal Helpline 
Toll-free service for people with civil legal problems where the client is first screened by an intake worker of this organization, and then is provided advice by an attorney.
Legal Aid Society of Mid-New York, Inc.  

Disaster Services 
Responds and provides relief to victims of disasters and enhances the ability of people to anticipate, survive and recover from disasters.

Emergency Assistance 
Provides the basic needs of food and clothing to low-income individuals and families.
Catholic Social Services of Broome County 

Emergency Family Services  
Emergency assistance to individuals and families through community meals and food pantry .
Salvation Army, Binghamton Corps

English as a Second Language
Assists non-English speakers to increase their English speaking and comprehension skills.    
Literacy Volunteers of Broome/Tioga, Inc.
 

Immigration Services  
Assists individuals and families in negotiating the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) forms and procedures.   
American Civic Association, Inc.
 

Multiple Sclerosis Knowledge, Independence, and Health
 
Provides education, advocacy, health/wellness and coaching to strengthen strategies for disease and life management to promote health and independence and improve quality of life.   
National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Upstate New York Chapter, Inc.
 

Residential Services
Emergency residential shelter provided for victims of domestic violence (both women and children). Education and prevention are focus of shelter and community outreach education.  
SOS Shelter, Inc.

Services to Armed Forces 
Provides eligible Armed Forces members and their families with 24-hour access to timely/reliable emergency communications, emergency financial assistance and case management services.
