BackPack Program


United Way is looking for individuals and organizations willing to conduct drives for limited time periods so that the BackPack program can be extended in Broome County beyond its original ending date of September 11. If your organization is interested in participating, please e-mail or call her at (607) 729-2592.

A special Day of Caring drive was held from August 14 through September 11 to help supplement the Food Bank of the Southern Tier’s BackPack Program. 

Many children who receive free or reduced priced school meals are left without adequate nutrition on the weekends. This program attempted to fill this gap by providing children at area schools who are at risk of hunger with a bag of nutritious food every Friday.

Here are the items that were included in the backpacks: 

FRUITS and VEGETABLES

  • 100% juice boxes

  • Applesauce cups

  • Small boxes of raisins

  • Fruit cups

  • Small cans of vegetables with “pop-top” lids

PROTEINS

  • Peanut butter

  • Tuna or canned chicken

  • Soups with meat or beans (especially with a “pop-top” lid or microwavable)

  • Chef Boy-R-D Meals

  • Macaroni and cheese in microwavable packets

GRAINS

  • Individual servings of cereal

  • Instant oatmeal packets

  • Granola bars

  • Crackers and cheese

DAIRY

  • ·Pudding cups (individual servings)

Items in the packs were:

  • kid friendly

  • individually packaged, or small and light enough to carry (no glass jars, please) 

  • shelf stable

  • easy to prepare - no need for a stove or a can opener

  • nutritious
