The Broome Leadership Institute Class of 2017 is hosting a fundraiser to benefit Fresh Cycles, the all-volunteer bicycle maintenance and recycling program running out of our Lee Barta Community Center on the North Side of Binghamton. Through hands-on tutorials, youth learn basic bicycle maintenance and repair skills, and earn their own bike. In 2008, Fresh Cycles was created to provide a positive space where volunteers, neighbors, and youth could refurbish bicycles while learning a valuable life skill that is both healthy and good for the environment. The name “Fresh Cycles” was used to represent fresh, new cycles of creativity, community engagement, empowerment, and independence. Programming has been targeted to the North Side neighborhood of Binghamton because it has some of the highest rates of poverty and childhood obesity in all of Broome County. Fresh Cycles is much more than a bicycle repair program—youth in the program take responsibility for their bikes, gain leadership skills, and develop positive relationships that in many cases may be the only positive adult interactions they have.
The Broome Leadership Institute (BLI) Class of 2017 will hold a Biker Ball Fundraiser on Thursday, May 11, 2017 at the Roberson Museum & Science Center from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m. Through this fundraiser our goal is to raise funds to build the capacity of the Fresh Cycles program through increased marketing and visibility to serve more youth in need on the North Side.
